Robot vacuums: look beyond suction

Compare hair-handling features, mopping and the maintenance a dock still needs.

Three things to check

  • Match features to your floors and the chores you want to reduce.
  • Measure the docking space and check access clearances.
  • Confirm replacement supplies and current stock.

Start with the chores you want to reduce, then compare the features that address those chores.

1. Hair and floor type

An anti-tangle brush is worth investigating if hair wraps around your current vacuum. It does not prove pet-hair pickup on carpet. Look for independent tests that match your floor type before treating a model as a winner.

2. Mopping and the dock

Compare mop lift, washing, drying and dust emptying separately. The Roborock Qrevo C lists a 10 mm mop lift; the Narwal Freo Z10 lists automatic washing, drying and emptying. Neither description means zero maintenance.

3. The space and upkeep

Measure the docking spot and allow the access clearances specified by the manual. The Qrevo C lists a 34 × 48.7 × 51.9 cm dock. Also check replacement bags, brushes, filters and cleaning instructions.

Our starting shortlist

These two models illustrate different features, not an independently tested best-buy ranking.
